We are all as haiku readers affected by a good haiku as well as puzzled by a \u201cnonsense\u201d haiku or, more seldom, put off by a \u201cbad\u201d haiku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>From idea to poem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do we write haiku? I myself start with an observation or an idea and play around with words to condense the idea into a \u201cku\u201d.&nbsp; Let me take two haiku, generated from the same observation and see how the end result differs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I choose the idea \u201cmorning fog\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One writer presented the following shahai (haiku written to a photo) on that topic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>magicians lake house,&nbsp;<br>disappears every morning;&nbsp;<br>foggy illusions ~<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>epc 1956-&nbsp; Ed Crowley<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photo by dbn dixie&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"402\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/yvonnewaern.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1411 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yvonnewaern.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-1.png 402w, https:\/\/yvonnewaern.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-1-215x300.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Another one was made by me, made into a haibun, i.e. a short paragraph followed by a haiku:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It happens that I have to get up early in the morning. In sunrise, at half past 3, I met a sight that covered the whole nature around me. It had disappeared when I finally rose, but it is still in my memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>morning fog clouds<br>leave shimmering twigs<br>lake lies still<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now to my experience of the haiku:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea that a house disappears every morning is mind boggling and still quite comprehensible, since it is the magician\u2019s house. I remember that haiku can be playful in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My own haiku is more \u2018awe\u2019 inspired. I chose words to alliterate, not for play but for beauty,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still I am more attracted by Ed\u2019s haiku.
